Outdoor Weeks are scheduled for each semester of the year, and are seasonally spaced. During an Outdoor Week, which runs from Saturday through Saturday, there are no academic classes and no large papers or projects assigned. This pause permits students to immerse themselves completely in the outdoor experience, allowing them to take full advantage of all the learning that occurs in the wilderness setting.

It’s Spring Break Week here at Wyoming Catholic, our annual reminder of just how completely our unique educational vision shapes everything that we do. Rather than spending their time on crowded southern beaches or packed into concerts and rave parties, our students will spend the next week trekking through the backcountry of the Mountain West, immersing themselves in the beauty and reality of Creation—“God’s First Book,” as we like to call it—and having the many insights they attain through their studies in the classroom deepened and enriched by a direct encounter with the natural world.

In order to make these Outdoor Weeks possible, the College suspends regular classes late enough in the semester to ensure the best weather possible, so as many of our students as possible can enter into the extraordinary intellectual, physical, and spiritual formation that our wilderness experiences provide. This year, more than 90% of our students are participating in a wide range of adventures—from canyoneering, climbing, and pack-rafting to horseback riding and training, kayaking, a pair of desert retreats, a surfing trip, and even a Latin-speaking river expedition. Each journey is designed not only to challenge students physically, but to cultivate leadership, friendship, and wonder. Led primarily by trained upperclassmen (who are supported by professional instructors when necessary), these trips form a central part of our Experiential Leadership Program (ELP).

As in years past, we are taking advantage of our students’ transformative adventures to launch our annual Spring Break Campaign, where we invite friends of the College to support these extraordinary young people in a special way during their time in the backcountry. Once again, several of the Wyoming Catholic College Board of Directors are offering a series of Challenge Grants, which means that gifts made during the coming days will be doubled, up to $50,000. Thanks to the generosity of our Board and our many supporters, our past Spring Break efforts have exceeded expectations, and with your help, we are confident that this year’s campaign will do the same!

Canyoneering in Zion

Throughout the week, we will be sharing stories from our young “embedded reporters in the field, highlighting the impact of these trips and the students who undertake them. We will collect those stories as the week goes one, and we’re sure to capture a magical moment or two (like last year’s amazing Cathedrals recording, from the bottom of a slot canyon in Utah). We invite you to follow along, share these stories with your friends, and consider making a gift today in support of our extraordinary young men and women.

Your generosity makes these life-changing encounters possible—and helps ensure that this quiet educational revolution taking place here in Lander continues to flourish.

Gifts made through the form below will automatically be assigned to the Flash Campaign, and will appear in the Goal Meter at the top of this page as it is updated each day. If you would prefer to make a gift over the phone, via check, or through another philanthropic vehicle (such as a gift of stock or a mutual fund transfer), please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at oia@wyomingcatholic.edu or by phone at (877) 332-2930, and the Advancement team will ensure your gift is assigned to the Spring Break campaign.
