About three quarters of the Bible is Old Testament and about two thirds of the Old Testament is poetry. If we add the poems in the New Testament (Song of Simeon, Magnificat, and more) and do the math, at least half of the Bible is poetry. In this lecture, “Singing to God: Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs,” Dr. Jim Tonkowich will introduce Hebrew poetry and the way it rhymes ideas. Then he’ll look at the Psalms, poetry in praise of God focusing on what has been called “the scandal of the psalter,” Psalm 137.
