I’m so thankful to have participated in this retreat expedition. Through a variety of activities – hiking, rock climbing, rappelling, white water rafting – we built a community of encouragement and joy. The COR missionaries did an exceptional job teaching leadership skills, but, more importantly, of being Christ to us.

The 21-day course was one of the best experiences of my life. Most people never get to experience camping dozens of miles into the wilderness, high up in the mountains, under the stars, near the glow of a campfire, listening to fellow students sing traditional rounds or to attend Mass on a peak overlooking several massive valleys created by the very same tiny, white Host elevated and adored in the fingers of the priest. Joseph Pearce, a fan and writer on J. R. R. Tolkien, attributes the continuing popularity of the “Lord of the Rings” to the fact that through the myth and fantasy world, Tolkien created, “not a flight from reality, but an escape to reality.” I would describe St. Dominic Parish’s recent wilderness adventure led by COR Expeditions in the same manner. Rather than leaving reality behind for four days, participants were invited to get in touch with their deepest reality as beloved sons and daughters of God, as disciples of Jesus Christ, His Son, and as couriers of the Holy Spirit. That means “stepping up and out” in the corner of the world entrusted to us each day and proactively exercising servant leadership…in the arena of faith in our home, work and worshiping communities!
